Defying the Odds: How One Man Recovered from a Stroke with the Help of His Family, Subject of the acclaimed documentary film Life.Support.Music

In August of 2004, guitarist Jason Crigler suffered an AVM brain hemorrhage while performing at a concert in Manhattan. He was rushed to the hospital where doctors gave Jason’s family a grim prognosis: “Even if he lives through the night, there won’t be much left of the man you know.”

Jason’s pregnant wife and the rest of his family refused to accept the dire prognosis. Convinced that Jason was “in there,” his family mounted an intensive and intimate course of rehabilitation that would force Jason’s doctors to reconsider the factors that inspire recovery.

Jason and his sister Marjorie have developed a powerful multimedia presentation that explains how and why Jason recovered. Using video footage of Jason’s rehabilitation taken by hospital staff and drawing on their unique, personal experience, they show how intense family involvement makes the difference in a positive recovery.

Who is Jason:
Jason Crigler has been playing music professionally for eleven years. He has worked with Marshall Crenshaw, John Cale, Linda Thompson, Erin Mckeown, Teddy Thompson, Ollabelle and many others. Jason has performed with Norah Jones, Suzanne Vega and Rufus Wainwright. Additionally, Jason has composed music for the feature-length documentary Ashtanga, NY and the film short, Grand Street. He has also composed the music for numerous Internet ad campaigns, including many for General Electric (GE).

Who is Marjorie:
Marjorie Crigler writes under the name Mojie Crigler. Her plays have been produced at Ensemble Studio Theatre, Magic Theatre, Carnegie Mellon University, and elsewhere. Her short stories have been published in several literary journals, including The Brooklyn Rail and The Gut. A graduate of Stanford University and Vermont College of Fine Arts, Marjorie also teaches writing; this fall, she will teach at The College of New Jersey.

Life.Support.Music.

Life.Support.Music. is a feature-length documentary about Jason’s recovery which will air on PBS’ POV series on July 7, 2009. The film, which ran at New York’s Cinema Village movie theatre, has screened at dozens of local and international film festivals, picking up several awards and earning rave reviews. “Heart-wrenching and inspiring,” says The Boston Globe. “Incredibly powerful,” says VOX Magazine. Testimonials

I am the attending physician in charge of Jason Crigler”s rehabilitation from brain injury. His remarkable recovery has reshaped my own medical practice. His inspiring story caused me to give everyone a chance for multidisciplinary rehabilitation and reevaluate various factors that can influence the outcome. It is my sincere hope that every practitioner in post-acute care hear his story or watch the movie about his recovery.
Heechin Chae, MD, Medical Director, Brain Injury, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Boston, MA

Life.Support.Music. should be required viewing for all who work with brain injury survivors and their families. Jason”s remarkable story humbles those of us who try to predict recovery. It reminds us that we still have much to learn about the power of hope and the brain”s ability to heal itself.
Christopher Carter, Pys.D, Director of Behavior Medicine, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Boston, MA

I have decided to do my community rotation in an area that focuses on brain injury. I also want to work with TBIs [traumatic brain injuries] and rehabilitation when I graduate. I was having a hard time deciding where I wanted to focus my nursing practice, and your story was like a revelation. In short, I want to thank you for helping me find my path. I will continue to update you about my nursing practice so that, as time goes on, you can see how far the ripples of your story have spread.

KIM PHUC PHAN THI — The Girl In the Picture & Advocate For Victims of War Crimes

The Vietnam War knows many tragedies, some more familiar than others. A photograph of a young girl running naked down a road, her skin on fire with napalm, changed the way the world looked at the Vietnam War, and at all wars. The photograph was transmitted around the world and later won a Pulitzer Prize. The girl in the picture is Kim Phuc.

Kim Phuc Phan Thi was born and raised in a village near Saigon. In 1972, Americans and the South Vietnamese Airforce dropped napalm bombs on her village. Nine-year-old Phuc fled from a Buddhist pagoda, where she and her family were hiding. Two of her infant cousins did not survive the attack, and Phuc was badly burned. Phuc was photographed running down the road, screaming from the burns to her skin. Ut’s photograph of Phuc remains one of the most unforgettable images of the Vietnam War.

Kim Phuc Phan Thi Book

Phuc was not expected to live. After two years, however, with the help of doctors who were committed to her care, she was able to return to her village and her family began to rebuild their lives. During the following years, the government subjected her to endless interviews and officials summoned her to Ho Chi Minh City to be used in propaganda films. Phuc had been forced to quit school and move back to her province, where she was supervised daily as a “national symbol of war.”

In 1986, Phuc was sent to study in Cuba and eventually settled in Canada. When Vietnam veterans invited her to participate at a service in Washington, as part of a Veteran”s Day observance, Phuc shared her experience to help others heal from the pain of war. While there, she spoke face to face with a veteran involved in dropping the bombs on that day in 1972, and forgave him.

Phuc’s incredible story was turned into a book called The Girl in the Picture and a documentary called Kim’s Story: The Road from Vietnam.

In light of Phuc’s struggle, she established a foundation to further heal the wounds of war. The Kim Foundation is a nonprofit organization committed to funding programs to heal children in war torn areas of the world. It is named for Phuc, who wants to give back what so many gave to her to contribute to her healing. In 1997 UNESCO named her a Goodwill Ambassador.

JASON & MARJORIE CRIGLER — life.support.music — An Inspirational Story of Family, Recovery and Courage!

May 7, 2013 in balanced living speaker, Featured Speakers, Health Care Speakers, Inspiring Lives & Stories, Jason & Marjorie Crigler; Life.Support.Music, Motivational Speakers, Speakers on Healthcare Issues

Life. Support. Music. redefines the “family film.”

In August 2004, Jason Crigler, one of New York City’s most sought-after guitarists, suffered a brain hemorrhage during a concert in Manhattan. That night at the hospital, the doctors told Jason’s family—if he makes it through the night, there won’t be much left of him. Jason’s wife, Monica, pregnant at the time, froze. “Everything completely stopped. I forgot all about the pregnancy. I think I left my body. I remember thinking, ‘This cannot be true. I cannot go on without Jason.’”

Days passed, and Jason’s family was forced to accept the new dark reality at hand. But they refused to accept the dark future described by doubtful doctors. So in the face of wrenching despair and horrifying odds, the Criglers made a resolution—Jason will make a full recovery. And thus began the long, grueling, implausible and mystifying journey chronicled in Life. Support. Music.

MAWI ASGEDOM — EDUCATION / TEACH SPEAKER –English Language Learners (ELL) Guide to Success

April 25, 2013 in Authors, balanced living speaker, Diversity Speakers, Education Speakers, Inspiring Lives & Stories, Mawi Asgedom Speaker, Speaker for Education Groups

As someone who had to learn English in school, I’ve always felt a special affinity for ELL students. I’ve created this 12-minute video that shares some of my best tips for ELL student success. I know that some students will not understand everything I say, and that’s okay – this video is meant as much for the educators as it is for the students. My assumption of course is that ELL students can achieve at incredibly high levels.
